Former Dalton teacher will be honored by Chattanooga Area Sports HOF

Peggy Michaels, a longtime teacher at Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga, will be among those honored at this year’s Greater Chattanooga Area Sports Hall of Fame banquet.

According to a release from the organization, Michaels will receive the Betty Probasco Award for lifetime service to athletics. Michaels, who taught physical education in both the Hamilton County (Tenn.) and Dalton school systems, has been the director of physical education for 25 years at GPS, where she developed an award-winning fitness program called SHAPE (Starting Habit to Attain Physical Excellence).

Michaels is a previous Tennessee P.E. Teacher of the Year and a recipient of the Flavious Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award from Tennessee Tech. She has also been recognized for her courage and inspiration in her 25-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

The banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the Chattanooga Convention Center. Among the other honorees are golfers Brooke Pancake and Steven Fox, the hall’s Athletes of the Year.

Tickets are $35 and available by calling John Farr, the hall’s president, at (423) 875-9282 by Feb. 15.

  • A Look Ahead: Former DHS standout will face ’Runners

Dalton State College’s basketball team is off to a hot start with an 8-1 record in its return to the court as the program’s signature sport. And even after Friday’s 85-61 exhibition loss to Alabama’s Jacksonville State, the buzz around the program is growing as the Roadrunners prepare to host Auburn-Montgomery at the trade center Tuesday night.
But a big part of the crowd expected for the game will be there cheering on the visiting Warhawks — or more likely, cheering on a returning hometown product.
