A Look Ahead: Diamond is last chance for Georgia

So far this summer, it has been a bitter pill to swallow for the Georgia All-Stars in the annual Stump on Sports Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Classics.

The players from the Volunteer state have won four out of five contests in the games, which will conclude this week with baseball on Tuesday and softball on Wednesday.

The results have been even more surprising after Saturday’s Tennessee sweep of both the boys and girls soccer games.

While girls soccer hasn’t been the strongest of female sports in Northwest Georgia the past few years, boys soccer has been a force in the area. Still, Tennessee managed to hold most of Whitfield County’s best soccer players scoreless in a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga.

With two contests remaining, Tennessee has already clinched the overall trophy for this year’s classics, but Georgia can earn some respect with the softball team having perhaps the best chance of salvaging a little face.

Northwest Whitfield standout Emily Boyd will lead Georgia at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Frost Stadium in Chattanooga. She will be joined by teammate Mykeah Johnson and coach Jason Brooker. Also, Dalton’s Allie Blackwood and Carson Hagin and Southeast Whitfield’s Tavi Parris will be on the Georgia roster.

The baseball game will be played Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Ridgeland High School in Rossville.

• BOYS AND GIRLS OF SUMMER: Even though it seems as if summer vacation just really got started good, it is already tournament time for local baseball and softball teams. After going through county league tournaments over the past two weeks, it is time to face competition from around the area.

The 2013 Dizzy Dean district tournaments began last week with play in the 9-year-old and 11-year-old divisions. This week, the tournaments ramp up.

Whitfield County will play host to the 7-year-olds at Edwards Park starting on Friday evening and continuing through Monday. Murray County will be the site of the 12-year-olds Friday through Monday as well.

The 8-year-olds will play at Rock Springs starting on Thursday, while the 10-year-olds will be in Rossville over the weekend. Gordon County will host the 13-year-old division.

Georgia Recreation and Parks Association tournaments are also going on this week for both baseball and softball teams. Best of luck to area teams as they seek a state title.

Dalton State College’s basketball team is off to a hot start with an 8-1 record in its return to the court as the program’s signature sport. But a big part of the crowd expected for the game will be there cheering on the visiting Warhawks — or more likely, cheering on a returning hometown product.
