A Look Ahead: Running takes over the local sports calendar

CLEMSON, S.C. — This week is a big one for runners. Since Dalton State College’s volleyball team is getting lonely as the only sport competing for the school, cross country will finally sprint into the action.

The men’s and women’s squads begin their season at 5 p.m. Friday at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s PowerAde Invitational at Moccasin Bend Race Course.

It will be the first meet of the season for the Roadrunners’ runners (See what I did there?) and the second sport to compete since the school announced plans in summer 2011 to relaunch athletics. The volleyball team became the first two weeks ago in a match versus Southern Wesleyan University in Central, S.C. The school last had sports — men’s basketball, golf and tennis — three decades ago when it was known as Dalton Junior College. The school also plans to have men’s and women’s tennis and golf, plus men’s basketball and co-ed competitive cheerleading.

Then on Saturday, the streets of Dalton will be filled with runners and their loyal companions.

The Dalton Parks and Recreation Department is teaming with the Humane Society of Northwest Georgia for the 5K Run and 1K Doggie Dash, scheduled for Saturday at Lakeshore Park.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the 5K race begins at 9 a.m. The 1K race starts at 10 a.m., and dogs can run with their owners in the shorter event.

The entry fees are $20 for the 5K and $10 for the 1K, and pre-registration is available through Wednesday at active.com. Race-day sign-ups also are available, but aren’t guaranteed an event T-shirt. Places will be awarded for the overall male and female winners, along with the top three males and females in each age group. Additionally, there will be food and drinks, plus games and inflatables for kids and a best-trick contests for dogs.

• On Tuesday, the Dalton State volleyball team looks for its first win of the season with a match against Truett-McConnell in Cleveland. The match begins at 7 p.m.

The Roadrunners won their first sets in program history on Saturday in matches against Berea College and the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky.

• On the prep scene this week, a number of volleyball teams will compete against one another.

Coahulla Creek and Murray County will compete in a tri-match Tuesday at Northwest Whitfield with the Lady Bruins. The first match starts at 5:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Dalton will play at Christian Heritage starting at 5:30 p.m.
