Public invited to welcome softball players back to Dalton

The Softball Players Association begins its second week of competition in the SPA World Championships today at Heritage Point in Dalton.

More than 40 teams are taking part in the tournaments, which continue through Sunday. Opening ceremonies are at 7 tonight and the public is invited to line the field during the event to welcome the players to Dalton.

“After a very strong start last week, we are excited to welcome a new wave of players in for the second week of this tournament,” Brett Huske, director of tourism for the Dalton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, said in a press release. “A returning event such as this provides an opportunity to make some strong connections with the players and their families.”

SPA Executive Director Ridge Hooks said the teams and the SPA staff cite Dalton as the most accommodating town in which they have the privilege to play, according to the release.

“The first tournaments have ended and the level of excitement they brought will only increase as we enter our second and third weeks here in Dalton,” Hooks said.

  • A Look Ahead: Former DHS standout will face ’Runners

Dalton State College’s basketball team is off to a hot start with an 8-1 record in its return to the court as the program’s signature sport. And even after Friday’s 85-61 exhibition loss to Alabama’s Jacksonville State, the buzz around the program is growing as the Roadrunners prepare to host Auburn-Montgomery at the trade center Tuesday night.
But a big part of the crowd expected for the game will be there cheering on the visiting Warhawks — or more likely, cheering on a returning hometown product.
