Wood tennis tourney set for next weekend

The 2012 Terry Wood Memorial Doubles Championship tennis tournament is scheduled for April 27-29 at Lakeshore Park in Dalton.

There will be doubles groupings available for men and women (18 and older), as well as an advanced junior singles division.

The annual tournament raises funds for the American Heart Association in honor of Wood, a local tennis enthusiast who had a history of high blood pressure and died suddenly from a cardiovascular event in 2005.

“This event honors a local man who loved tennis and his community,” tournament director Stacy Junkins said in a media release. “In doing so, we are raising awareness and funds for the American Heart Association in a fun and healthy way. We are excited because the tournament is growing each year.”

Entry fee is $25 for adults and $20 for juniors, and the registration deadline is Saturday. Each player will receive a free T-shirt for participating, and all proceeds will go to the American Heart Association

A cookout for all participants and their families will kick off the tournament on April 27. For information and registration forms, visit nogta.com

  • A Look Ahead: Former DHS standout will face ’Runners

Dalton State College’s basketball team is off to a hot start with an 8-1 record in its return to the court as the program’s signature sport. And even after Friday’s 85-61 exhibition loss to Alabama’s Jacksonville State, the buzz around the program is growing as the Roadrunners prepare to host Auburn-Montgomery at the trade center Tuesday night.
But a big part of the crowd expected for the game will be there cheering on the visiting Warhawks — or more likely, cheering on a returning hometown product.
