A Look Ahead: Golf kicks off a busy prep week
Five local high school girls golf teams will compete today in the Lady Conasauga Cup, an annual charity tournament which will be played this year at Indian Trace Golf Course in Chatsworth.
Dalton, Murray County, North Murray, Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield will compete in the event, which begins at 2 p.m.
A Look Ahead: Alumni out to have fun, raise money
Bo Headden is a 1983 graduate of Northwest Whitfield High School and the oldest person on the Bruins alumni football team, which has been practicing in preparation for an upcoming game.
Even with current seniors playing on the team, and an age gap of around three decades, Headden still sees a bond is there.
What's Going On: Region play points the way to state
As we move into the second half of April, the focus for many of the local high schools’ spring athletics shifts to the postseason.
Whether it is golf, tennis or track and field, there are tons of region events scheduled for this week which marks the beginning of the march to state.
What's Going On: Local teams squaring off on the pitch
You’re going to hear and read a lot this week about some gigantic, season-defining, high school baseball series between a couple rival schools from around this area.
I’m not really sure what that’s all about. So for the next 481 words, I’ll spare you any mention of it.
Instead, soccer dominates the space below.
What's Going On: UGA fans to get a chance to rub elbows
Area alumni and fans of the University of Georgia will soon have a nice opportunity to hear from some of the school’s best known faces in athletics.
The school’s alumni and athletic associations will hold a UGA Day from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 7 at the Catoosa County Civic Center in Ringgold.
What's Going On: Rivals play with it all on the line
Last season the main region challenger to Dalton High School’s boys soccer team was Southeast Whitfield.
This year, it’s the guys from Tunnel Hill.
Sure, the last time Dalton and Northwest played, the Catamounts dominated in a 6-1 victory with zero Sub-region 7-4A implications. But they will play again, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bruins’ field.
Why do I feel this one could be a little closer?
What's Going On: Schedule gets tight in region
At the collegiate level of baseball, one of the staples of the sport is the three-game series. The visiting team comes in on Thursday night or Friday morning with games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. At the Major League level, it stretches to another game in most cases and one rolls right into the other.
Starting this week, local high school baseball teams will get a taste of that tight scheduling and the importance of having strong depth in your pitching rotation.
What's Going On: Milkshake is worth a long ride
I’m not a fan of milkshakes. However, if you are, then there’s extra incentive to make the most of what could be a staple of the area’s bicycle community.
A group of local riders has organized a weekly event called the “Milkshake Ride,” a 20-30 mile event throughout the Cohutta-Varnell area.
What's Going On: Rivalries are the gift that keeps on giving
This year, the spring prep season’s version of Christmas comes eight days early.
On March 16 of last year, I had my first experience watching Dalton High School’s and Southeast Whitfield’s boys soccer teams play. This year, fans like myself don’t have to wait as long to watch area soccer at its finest — and the Catamounts don’t have to wait as long to erase bad memories of last year.
What's Going On: Local rivals meeting up on the road
Meeting on the big field only makes this one bigger for schools which could rightly be considered cousins.
Two local high school baseball programs — Coahulla Creek and Northwest Whitfield — will play one another for the first time Friday night. But it’s not at the Colts’ field in Varnell or the Bruins’ home in Tunnel Hill. The two schools, which are about 10 minutes away from each other will instead play at AT&T Park, the home of the minor league baseball’s Chattanooga Lookouts. First pitch is scheduled for 5:55 p.m.
