State senator resigns

AUGUSTA (AP) — Ed Tarver has resigned his state Senate seat after being confirmed as the new U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia.

Tarver’s resignation is effective at noon Monday.

He was confirmed as a federal prosecutor on Friday by the U.S. Senate. President Barack Obama nominated the Augusta Democrat to the post in September.

The Southern District of Georgia covers 43 counties stretching from Savannah and Augusta to Statesboro and Dublin.

Gov. Sonny Perdue must now call a special election to fill Tarver’s seat.
