Associated Press

— A metro Atlanta soldier who was recently killed in a plane crash in Afghanistan has been laid to rest.

A memorial service was held Saturday for Sgt. 1st Class Omar Forde at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.

Forde, of Marietta, was based in Fort Riley, Kan., and died in the crash on Dec. 17 along with five other soldiers.

The Marietta Daily Journal reports one of Forde’s close friends delivered the eulogy and recalled Forde’s days as a defensive back on the Kennesaw Mountain High School football team.

Army officials have said 28-year-old Forde enlisted in 2005. He had been deployed to Iraq twice, and was serving his first deployment to Afghanistan at the time of the crash.
