How states fared on unemployment benefit claims

Associated Press

— The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose just 1,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 308,000, a tiny increase that leaves the level of applications near six-year lows. The four-week average dropped to 305,000, the lowest since May 2007.

Here are the states reporting large decreases. No state reported increases above 1,000.

States with the biggest decreases:

California: Down 3,754, due to fewer layoffs in services, finance, insurance and real estate

Georgia: Down 2,719, due to fewer layoffs in manufacturing, hotels and restaurants

New York: Down 2,376, due to fewer layoffs in public administration, construction and transportation

South Carolina: Down 1,516, due to fewer layoffs in manufacturing

Washington: Down 1,178, no reason given
