A Georgia pawnshop owner is angry about a cable company’s decision not to run his advertising if it shows firearms.
United Loan and Firearms owner Ray Reynolds says his most recent commercial -- a spoof of the History Channel reality show Pawn Stars -- shows firearms on the rack and inside the counter in some of the video.
Reynolds must remove any reference or image of weapons from the ad to comply with the policy of Comcast Cable’s advertising sales division, Comcast Spotlight, he told The Augusta Chronicle (http://bit.ly/15rwP ).
“Consistent with longstanding NBC policies, Comcast Spotlight has decided it will not accept new advertising for firearms or weapons moving forward,” Comcast Spotlight spokesman Chris Ellis said in a statement. “This policy aligns us with the guidelines in place at many media organizations.”
Eddie Walden, the owner of Walden’s Outdoors in Martinez, has advertised for several years with Comcast. His family-owned business sells archery equipment, firearms and accessories.
Walden said he found out Monday that his commercials also will be pulled if changes aren’t made to eliminate the depiction of weapons.
“I think it’s wrong,” Walden said. “I look at it as a free-speech thing.”
