Georgia’s Chief Supreme Court justice is scheduled to deliver his first State of the Judiciary address later this week.
Court spokeswoman, Jane Hansen, says Justice Hugh P. Thompson is expected to highlight the need for Georgians to have equal access to justice, regardless of their socioeconomic status during his speech to state lawmakers on Wednesday.
Thompson is also expected to speak on the need for legal services in rural areas. Court officials say 70 percent of Georgia attorneys work in a five-county area surrounding Atlanta, but six counties have no lawyers at all.
Court officials say the concentration of attorneys in the Atlanta area has led to an increase in people representing themselves throughout other areas and losing.
Video of the address will be available online.
