Some park rangers to lose enforcement powers

STATESBORO — The Georgia Department of Natural Resources board of directors has voted to scale back policing power for some state park rangers.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/148jnc3 ) that the vote was part of plan to reorganize the department’s law enforcement division and the move will consolidate five separate units within the agency into one.  The consolidation will be implemented between now and 2018.

Officials say the received 2,800 emails, letters and phone calls about the consolidation during a 30-day public comment and most of them supported the plan.

Officials say the department’s 200 officers will still patrol its 155 properties, but about 80 of them will no longer have law enforcement powers.
