Work to begin soon on $21M Fort Gordon project

Associated Press

— Work will soon begin on a $21 million project to expand and renovate a shopping complex on Fort Gordon.

The Augusta Chronicle reports that Fort Gordon has been authorized to renovate and nearly double its 20-year-old facility, known as the Fort Gordon Post Exchange.

Maj. Gen. LaWarren V. Patterson, Fort Gordon’s commanding officer, says the project shows the faith and confidence that both the Department of Defense and the Army and Air Force Exchange Service have in the Fort Gordon Post Exchange.

Work is set to begin Nov. 1.

The newspaper says the post exchange reported more than $8 million in earnings last year, thanks to an exemption from sales tax and an average merchandise price that is 25 percent less than department stores off Fort Gordon.
