COLLEGE PARK — A police officer who was wounded just south of Atlanta in a fatal shootout with a suspect has been released from the hospital, authorities said Thursday.

The 20-year department veteran, whose identity hasn’t been released, was on patrol Thursday morning when he approached a suspicious person. Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester said the suspect had a warrant for failing to appear in court and the man’s identity has not yet been released.

The officer was shot in his back, authorities said. The officer was alert after the shooting when he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta “and is going to be OK,” Lester said, adding that the officer’s bullet-proof vest likely saved his life.

The shooting happened Thursday morning on White City Road near College Park, just inside the Interstate 285 perimeter, Lester said.

CBS Atlanta reports that the officer is a member of a Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team. Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Sherry Land told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that two officers were involved, but only one was shot. It was unclear if both officers fired at the man.

The shooting prompted a lockdown at a nearby elementary school, police said.
