GOP Rep. Kingston makes Senate race official

SAVANNAH — Rep. Jack Kingston of Savannah is joining what’s turning out to be a crowded 2014 race for the U.S. Senate in Georgia.

Kingston confirmed his plans Wednesday in interviews with Atlanta media outlets. He planned to officially launch his campaign Thursday in Savannah.

Kingston has widely been expected to join the race for the Senate seat being vacated next year when Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss retires.

Republican Reps. Paul Broun of Athens and Phil Gingrey of Marietta have already launched their campaigns. Former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel sent an email to supporters Wednesday saying she’s still considering the race.

Kingston has served the past two decades in Congress. He raised more than $843,000 in the first quarter of this year and scheduled a Friday “kickoff” fundraiser in Savannah.
