Candidate took $50,000 in prohibited donations

SAVANNAH — A Georgia congressional candidate says his campaign made an honest, rookie mistake when it accepted $54,500 in political contributions linked to a single Augusta donor.

Retired businessman Eugene Yu of Evans had to refund $50,000 in contributions that either exceeded campaign finance limits or were prohibited altogether by federal law. Yu’s fundraising reports show all of the money was given to his U.S. Senate campaign by Augusta businessman Wayne B. Brown and his company, WayneWorks.

Yu has abandoned his Senate bid to run for Georgia’s 12th District U.S. House seat.

Yu’s campaign first reported $45,000 in prohibited donations from Brown as a personal loan of the candidate’s own money. Brown says he owed Yu money for a shared real-estate investment and it was deposited to the candidate’s campaign account.
