Savannah mayor seeks public’s help after shootings

SAVANNAH — After three shootings in three days on Savannah’s south side, Mayor Edna Jackson on Thursday pleaded with residents to help police to identity suspects.

Two of the shootings were fatal. Savannah State University student Rebecca Foley, 21, was gunned down outside her apartment complex Monday night. The next night, a 17-year-old boy was shot to death.

Alderman Tony Thomas, who represents the south side, said residents in the community are very upset, though police traffic stops and interviews in the area after the shootings have given residents some measure of security.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/VxCYO6) that some aldermen expressed concerns that the mayor should not visit crime scenes, which has been her practice. But Jackson said she considers such visits part of her responsibility as the mayor.
