Young near top at Prix

Dalton High School sophomore Ethan Young made the finals among an elite crowd for the second straight day in Orlando, Fla., placing 13th in the 200-meter backstroke at the Arena Grand Prix, a USA Swimming-sanctioned event that included international competition.

Young, who turns 16 on Tuesday, represented Carpet Capital Aquatics Club at the event, where he placed seventh in the 100 backstroke on Friday.

On Saturday, he had a qualifying time of 2 minutes, 8.30 seconds in the 200 backstroke to reach the “B” final — the eight fastest swimmers make the “A” final, with the next eight in “B” and eight more in “C” — and improved upon that time in the finals, where he clocked a 2:06.45. He was fifth in his final.

“He did outstanding for a 15-year-old,” CCAC and Dalton High swimming and diving coach Charles Todd said.

The top finisher in the event was Russian Olympian Arkady Vyatchanin, whose time of 1:56.95 topped U.S. Olympian Ryan Lochte’s 1:58.12.
