Dalton State men’s golf holds fifth in Rome

Led by Chase Jones’ 1-under-par 71, all five golfers on the Dalton State College men’s team shot a 75 or better in the opening round of the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational in Rome.

The Roadrunners are fifth overall in the team standings after shooting a 5-over 293 in the four-count scoring format for the two-day tournament. The Roadrunners are eight strokes behind Ogle-thorpe University, which opened with a 3-under 285.

The tournament, which concludes with today’s second round, is being played at Coosa Country Club and Stonebridge Golf Course. The Roadrunners played at Coosa on Monday and play at Stonebridge today.

Jones started on the 13th hole of the course and got off to a fast start with a birdie on the par 5. He played par golf through the next eight holes before moving to 2-under with a birdie on the par-5 4th. He gave a stroke back on No. 6 but played par golf the rest of the way with birdies on No. 7 and No. 10 and bogeys on No. 9 and No. 12.

Individually, Jones is tied with four other golfers for eighth. He is seven strokes behind William Carey University’s Keaton Stamps, who shot a 6-under 66.

Also for Dalton State, Tyler Mitchell finished with a 1-over 73 and Levi Nix was at 74. Both Thomas Rimel and Anthony D’Angelo shot 75.

Former Dalton High School golfer Will Morrow, who plays for Oglethorpe, shot a 2-over-par 74.

n Savannah Nelson had 15 kills and three blocks while Alyne Bianchi finished with 15 digs as Dalton State’s women’s volleyball team improved to 3-8 with a 3-1 win over Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tenn.

Martin Methodist won the first game 25-17, but Dalton State rallied to win three straight in the best-of-five match, 25-20, 25-17, 25-16.

The Roadrunners’ Michaela Askew had 16 assists and nine digs, while Tori Pierce had 11 digs and Clarrissa Weber had 13 assists.
