Prep roundup: Dalton tennis secures top seed

Dalton High School’s tennis teams are used to being at or near the top in whichever region or sub-region they compete.

This year is no different.

Both the boys and girls teams beat rival Northwest Whitfield on Thursday at Edwards Park in Varnell to clinch the top seed from Sub-region 7B-4A for next month’s Re-gion 7-4A tournament at Lakeshore Park in Dalton.

The Lady Catamounts beat North-west 5-0, while Dalton’s boys rolled 4-1.

“It is nice to get that No. 1 seed for a good first-round draw in the region tournament to try and earn a spot at state,” Dalton coach David Hilley said. “No matter what the score, (Northwest) didn’t give it to us. We had to go out and earn it. I was proud of the way we responded to a big challenge.”

Dalton’s girls (8-5, 5-0 Sub-region 7B-4A) lost just one set, and that came from the No. 2 doubles team of Shelby Fromm and Olivia Tidwell. It was the first time this year that Fromm and Tidwell had teamed up as Fromm’s regular partner, Mary Margaret Snipes, was ill Thursday. The duo lost the first set 6-1, but stormed back and recovered for a 6-1 win in the second set before closing it out with 6-2 third set.

“Olivia is a freshman, and you are putting her right in the fire,” Hilley said. “It took a little while for them to get used to playing with each other. They got on a good roll and were able to recover well. Olivia has a good overall game, and she is going to be strong for the next couple of years.”

Singles wins came from No. 1 Anna Grace Wilson, 6-4, 6-4, No. 2 Olivia Dinges, 6-3, 7-6 (6-0), and No. 3 Sydney Tankersley, 6-1, 6-1. The other doubles win was from No. 1 McKenzie Creswell and Caroline Calfee, 6-4, 7-5.

Northwest’s girls fell to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the sub-region.
