Mitchell Boggs has new deal with White Sox

Mitchell Boggs is back with the Chicago White Sox — with a new contract and things to prove.

One week after the MLB franchise waived the Dalton native, it signed Boggs to a minor league contract on Sunday, as reported on Twitter by MLB.com’s Scott Merkin. Additional details of Boggs’ new contract were not available by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

The Chicago White Sox waived the Dalton native last Sunday to reduce its spring roster to 33 players and escape a one-year, $1.1 million deal with the relief pitcher. The 2002 Dalton High School graduate had a 12.79 ERA in seven relief appearances this spring, but is two years removed from shining with the St. Louis Cardinals as one of the top setup men in baseball.

Boggs was on the St. Louis Cardinals’ 2011 World Series team and spent the 2012 season as the Cardinals’ setup reliever. He led the National League in holds with 34 and also had a 4-1 record and 2.21 ERA. His 2013 campaign included an 0-3 record and 11.05 ERA in 18 appearances.

He started the year as the team’s closer when No. 1 stopper Jason Motte suffered a season-ending injury, but Boggs failed in three of his five save opportunities. He made two stints with the Cardinals’ Triple-A Memphis affiliate before being traded to the Rockies. In Colorado, Boggs made two promising appearances to bring his ERA to 8.10, but he again was sent to the minors. He made another trip to the majors and finished the season with a 3.12 ERA in nine appearances with the Rockies, who chose not to bring Boggs back for the 2014 season.

This was the first free agent experience for the University of Georgia graduate.

While the White Sox cut Boggs, the team had plans of bringing him back with a different contract.

According to the report on MLB.com after Boggs was cut, general manager Rick Hahn said Boggs showed improvement after taking suggestions from pitching coach Don Cooper on delivery changes. Hahn did not rule out a return to one of the club’s minor league organizations, Triple-A Charlotte, if no other team signs him.
