Middle school roundup: Eastbrook girls win 3rd straight soccer crown

Eastbrook’s girls soccer team won the North Georgia Middle School Athletic League for a third consecutive season with a 3-0 win Thursday against North Whitfield.

Ebony McDermott scored twice, and Anna Torres added a goal for Eastbrook. Ally Sanchez earned the shutout against the Lady Pioneers, who defeated New Hope 3-2 in overtime Tuesday to advance beyond the semifinals.

In the match, Josselin Paz and Natalie Tapia scored for New Hope, which finished the season 5-1-2 overall.

North Whitfield coaches did not report statistics from either match by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

In the other semifinals match, Eastbrook won 1-0 against Bagley. Betsy Santos scored the lone goal from 25 yards out, and Sanchez earned the shutout.

• In the boys playoffs, Valley Point earned a 2-1 championship win Thursday against Eastbrook (7-1). Saul Lerma scored for Eastbrook. Valley Point coaches did not report statistics by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

To reach the championship, Eastbrook earned a 2-1 win Wednesday against New Hope. Leonardo Rangel and Rivaldo Sandate each scored for Eastbrook after Roger Contreras put New Hope (4-4) ahead with an early second-half score.

Scores or statistics from Valley Point’s semifinals victory were not reported by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.


Dalton 16, Cleveland 3: The Cougars (11-1-1) won on the road Thursday with Cade Gabriel’s 4-for-5 performance at the plate.

Gabriel had four RBIs, with a triple and a double. Harrison Norman also had a four-RBI day from his three hits, and J.P. Tighe and Caleb Ramsey each finished with three hits.

Harrison Hughes pitched four innings and allowed one earned run to notch a win on the mound. He struck out four.
