Roadrunners host matches at Lakeshore

Dalton State College’s men’s and women’s tennis teams were swept in a tough opening test to their spring schedule on Wednesday.

The pair of 9-0 losses to Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville came to teams ranked in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Divis-ion I poll. Georgia Gwinnett’s men are ranked fifth, while its women are ranked 20th.

Each of the team matches consisted of three best-of-three sets doubles matches and six pro-set singles matches. None of the singles matches went to a third set and Dalton State was held to one point in four of the six doubles matches.

“Georgia Gwinnett has one of the strongest program in the NAIA or the NCAA,” Roadrunners men’s coach Zack Rogers said in a release from Dalton State. “We did not play well in doubles, but I was encouraged by how we fought in singles. We are a work in progress, but we will be a very competitive program in year one and especially as we gain experience.”

Said Dalton State women’s coach Michel Bates, “Our team got a nice wake-up call today. It will be good for us going forward to show us what it takes to compete with one of the top, if not the top, program in the country.”

Dalton State’s men host Ala-bama’s Gadsden State at 1 p.m. today, while the women host Snead State Community College (Boaz, Ala.) at 1 p.m. Saturday. All of the Roadrunners’ home matches are played at Lakeshore Park in Dalton.
