Dalton State rolls by Itawamba CC

The Dalton State College men’s tennis team handed Itawamba (Miss.) Community College its first loss of the season in matches played Friday at Lakeshore Park in Dalton.

The Roadrunners swept the Indians 9-0 to improve to 9-3 this season.

“I thought overall the team did a great job staying focused and closing out matches,” Dalton State coach Zack Rogers said in a Dalton State release. “I was especially pleased with David (Draghiceanu’s) play. He has a great work ethic and is starting to emerge as a leader on the team.”

Draghiceanu teamed with Noah Cleary for an 8-1 win in No. 3 doubles, then won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Dalton State also received singles wins from No. 1 Nikolay Nikiforov, 6-2, 6-3, No. 2 Lucas de Souza, 6-0, 6-3, No. 3 Adam Hornby, 6-3, 6-2, No. 5 Juan Pablo Arguello, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 6 Hadyn Fava, 6-2, 6-0.

Other doubles winners were No. 1 Nikiforov and Hornby, 8-6, and No. 2 de Souza and Arguello, 8-3.

“We still need to find more consistent play at doubles,” Roger said.

Dalton State’s men return to competition with an 11 a.m. match on March 27 against Point University at Lakeshore Park.
